Mashup: Wordle!

By vineet

Wordle is a toy (nifty tool) for generating “word clouds” from text that you provide. The clouds give greater prominence to words that appear more frequently in the source text. You can tweak your clouds with different fonts, layouts, and color schemes.

Wordle also lets you create these "word clouds" using a RSS feed. Sumit Kataria has written a PHP script to generate RSS feeds from DayPIs for any search term you have. Just a perfect fit to use with Wordle!

Here is a RSS feed for Barack Obama - http://develop.daylife.com/demos/feed.php?query=%22Barack%20Obama%22

Feed it to Wordle on http://wordle.net/create and here is what you get

Another RSS feed for "Global Warming" OR "Climate Change" - http://develop.daylife.com/demos/feed.php?query=%22Global%20Warming%22%2...

And here is its Wordle! -

The Newsweek Threatmeter

By vineet

Newsweek is using the DayPIs to build an interactive application called the Threat Meter. A user can rate the different issues on the Threat Meter and read negatively opinionated stories (threats!) published by Newsweek and their partners The Washington Post and MSNBC related to the issues.

Once the user has rated the issues, he can see the overall ratings as well as read more about the issues.

The Threat Meter is also available as a widget to put it up on your own blog or facebook profile.

Read more below about the DayPI calls that Newsweek uses to power this application.

Spicy News on ChillX

Spicy News ChillX.com core focus is to provide our community a place to interact with like minded people and provide functionality that’s relevant to the target audience.

It’s about providing features that member’s request. Before we went about integrating Daylife we studied our members habits, based on this we worked closely with Daylife to provide News relevant to our members’ taste. If someone just wants to read news there are leading portals that provide this so what's different…. Our differentiating factor was to build a theme around providing content that is appealing to our target audience. In India most people love to know about certain key topics such as the gossip of their favorite bollywood star, Cricket, about stocks, etc. We made these topics accessible in an easy to use manner.

The problem is that contextually related information even within a single website is spread across the entire site. To find the related information requires a significant amount of searching and digging. In order to resolve this we designed our news section based on predictive modeling of context and the member’s interest at a given point in time.

To see an example of who are the most popular role models in India you could visit ChillX Spice Pages

To see an example of the most interesting News articles about a specific topic such as Bollywood you could visit the following link ChillX Bollywood News
and click on the Bollywood News tab on this page, this provides the most interesting news articles instead of every article.

Our members gave feedback through out the development cycle thus enabling us to display specific popular news that was of interest, rather than have general categories like most News portals.

Relevant aggregation was key to our Spicy News section and Daylife provided us the ability to do this.

In summary the Application provides:

1) Topic to Topic related navigation. Barack Obama Versus George W. Bush OR What is Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Doing in India

2) Contextual (to India) search based on a dynamic, hottest, popular topics that's relevant to a specific demographic (India).

3) Pre-Populated search page with dynamic contextually related topics

4) Adapting the Information model based on member’s interest. This focuses both on topics and articles, here the display priority and grouping by context is continuously adjusted based on interest.

5) News Ticker: Automatically rotates most attractive news items (blue area at top of pages) - ChillX Spice Pages

Green Topics on Telegraph.co.uk

By vineet

We have got more than a dozen requests for green topics. Daylife currently does not have pre-defined topics around "green concepts".

However, our partners at telegraph and treehugger have developed widgets and applications around green concepts by using our search APIs, thus, creating search based topics themselves.

Read below how to form these topics.

Psychic Searcher

http://scheedule.com/~gschech2/Hack/PsychicSearch/

Psychic Searcher analyzes your content and delivers you with relevant resources. Psychic Searcher breaks the traditional ideas of having the user initiate the gathering of resources, by showing relevant items as the user is writing.

Imagine if you were a student writing a paper. Psychic Searcher could analyze what you were writing about and deliver you with the news articles, images, and search results that you need to write your paper.

Psychic Searcher is just an example how what can be done with context analysis. Ideally a tool like Psychic Searcher would be integrated into a text editor like Microsoft Word. It could be used as a tool to retrieve information and images that might be useful to the user. This could be more effective because we could do a context analysis on just the active paragraph. Psychic Searcher is by no means a replacement text editor, but is rather some exploratory development in enhancing the user’s ability to gather information asynchronously.
