Using the Daylife API on ECProject.org

By mwhitenack

Vineet Gupta of Daylife was apparently checking out my blog, Earth Community Project yesterday and noticed I'd created a "News Search" box for the site and wanted to know a little about it, and asked if I'd share my experience with the Daylife API here as well.

My blog is generally about promoting social and environmental responsibility. I try to talk about current events from around the world and talk about issues that impact all of us, but there are times when I'm simply too busy to search the web for new information and new topics of discussion. A while back, I wondered to myself if I could find a way to completely automate my blog so that I had to do very little to maintain it. While I was half-heartedly searching for a way to do that, I stumbled across Daylife, and by pure accident saw that there was an API available. Now I'm using the Daylife API in a number of different ways, which I'll detail below.

USAToday Flights Portal: Today in the Sky

By vineet

USA Today expanded their Today in the Sky Blog by Ben Mutzabaugh to a flights portal by creating a mashup of Daylife and Kayak services. They built topic pages for Airlines, airports and hot flying topics by pulling real time flights data from Kayak and stories, quotes, connections and pictures from DayPIs. You can go to an American Airlines topic page to see the ontime performance of the AA flights as well as news content from around the world for them.

The USA Today folks used the same platform to build this portal as the Cruise Log that they built earlier.

NBA Teams on TNT.TV

By vineet

TNT.tv launched a NBA portal with the topic page for NBA as the home page and hosting team pages for all the NBA teams.

The application pulls stories, images, connections and quotes about team pages using the Topic APIs.

Bollywood News

By vineet

From the Wikipedia: A chutney (British spelling) or chatni (Urdu, Hindi, Bengali or Tamil transliteration) is a term for a variety of sweet and spicy condiments, originally from the Indian subcontinent.

Bollywood Chutney is Amit's brainchild to bring the spicy gossip and news about bollywood actors, actresses and films. As Amit describes Bollywood Chutney: "The most awesome place to gossip about all things Bollywood around the UK/US/Canada with more chutney than you can handle!"

The Bollywood Chutney news sections are enabled by the DayPIs using the search_getRelatedArticles call.

MLB on TBS and TNT Sports

By vineet

Folks at Turner built a portal for baseball news and topic pages for all MLB teams.

This MLB portal brings you stories, photos, quotes and connections for MLB as well as all the teams. For your convenience, listed below is a list of all the MLB topic IDs:

The Washington Post Issue Tracker

By vineet

Washingtonpost.com uses Daylife to power the Issue Coverage Tracker, showing you which presidential candidates are most closely associated with key issues of the US 2008 campaign. Drawing on our analysis of thousands of news sources, it provides a quick and compelling visual representation of press coverage among the candidates and the major issues.

The issue tracker application is NOT built using the public API. It is the work done as a professional service for The Post. However, there are combinations of APIs that can be used to get similar type of data.
